ABOUT DENTURES

WHAT ARE DENTURES?

Dentures are a specific type of dental appliance designed to act as a replacement for any missing teeth that you have. What makes them notable - and what separates them from alternative options - is that they can be completely taken out of your mouth. All told, they're a great way to achieve that natural-looking smile and improved appearance that you're after - even if they admittedly take some getting used to.

TYPES OF DENTURES

The two main types of dentures to be aware of are "full" and "partial." With the former, any remaining teeth are removed from your mouth and, once your tissue has been healed, the full dentures are placed into their final position. With a partial denture, the dentures sit on top of a metal framework that attaches itself to any remaining teeth that you have.

WHAT IS THE COST FOR DENTURES?

The answer to this question will obviously vary depending on a number of factors, including the dental provider you go with and even the area of the country you live in. Having said that, low-cost dentures usually run between $300 and $500 per denture, while a complete set of upper and lower dentures can run anywhere between $600 and $1,000 per denture or more.

ARE DENTURES COVERED BY INSURANCE?

In the United States, most dental insurance providers cover some - or even all - of the cost of dentures. However, you should still contact your insurance provider directly to learn more about exactly what they provide.

HOW TO PAY FOR YOUR DENTURES?

In addition to coverage by your insurance (and, of course, paying out of pocket), you always have the option to take out third party financing to pay for your dentures, such as CareCredit, Wells Fargo Financial, LendingClub, Green Sky and etc. Please book your next appointment today or contact us to find out more about how you could qualify for using these third party financing.

BEFORE DENTURES

WHO NEEDS DENTURES?

Anyone who has gaps between their teeth, has missing or loose teeth, gets chronic toothaches or regularly experiences issues like bleeding gums would absolutely be viable candidates for dentures.

WHEN DO YOU NEED DENTURES?

In addition to those signs outlined above, experts recommend that you seek some sort of prosthesis like dentures when you have lost more than two to three teeth - especially over a short period.

ADVANTAGES OF DENTURES

Dentures bring with them a wide range of benefits that cannot be ignored, even going beyond the obvious cosmetic advantages. Not only do they prevent further shifting of your remaining teeth, but they can also improve speech, help patients chew food more easily and more.

ALTERNATIVE TO DENTURES

if dentures aren't an option for you, you may be a viable candidate for getting alternative options like implants and bridges. While it's certainly true that the cost will be higher, these do feel more like one's own real teeth than dentures do.

WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS OF DENTURES?

Dentures definitely take some getting used to - which can make eating difficult, especially in the first few weeks. Likewise, dentures may cause you to have difficulty pronouncing certain words, and they may slide and shift in your mouth if you're not careful. You also need to take excellent care of them to make sure they don't stain, crack or break.

DURING DENTURES

WHAT ARE DENTURES MADE OUT OF?

The base of dentures are typically made from a gum-colored acrylic material. The teeth themselves are commonly made out of plastic or porcelain. With partial dentures, the framework will usually be constructed out of a chrome-cobalt material.

HOW LONG DOSE A DENTURE TREATMENT TAKES?

The denture development process - which involves making impressions of your jaw, taking measurements and similar tasks - will likely take several weeks and will require several appointments. The process of removing your teeth and fitting the dentures can take a few additional months before everything is finalized.

ARE DENTURES PROCEDURES PAINFUL?

Thanks to the type of anesthesia that will be used during the process, you shouldn't feel any pain during the denture procedure itself. In the weeks following the procedure, it is common to experience minor irritation or soreness as your mouth adjusts to your dentures - but this will subside. You will also probably experience a greater degree of saliva production in the immediate aftermath of the procedure, but this too will return to its normal levels sooner rather than later.

WHAT ARE 3D & DIGITAL DENTURES?

Digital dentures are those that have been 3D printed using a biocompatible monolithic material. They can be either short-term or long-term and they can dramatically reduce both the cost of the dentures and the length of the procedure required to place them in your mouth.

CAN I CUSTOMIZE COLORS & SHAPES OF MY DENTURES?

With modern technology (like 3D printing outlined above), you can absolutely create custom colors and even custom shapes for your dentures - all in the name of giving you the highest degree of control over your appearance possible.

AFTER DENTURESS

CAN I DRINK OR SMOKE WITH DENTURES?

When it comes to eating and drinking with dentures, it's certainly something that takes a fair amount of getting used to. But with a little practice, you likely won't notice any negative impact to what types of foods you can consume. It is not recommended to smoke once you have dentures to prevent staining, along with other oral and health-related complications. In the immediate aftermath of the procedure, you will probably be placed on a diet of soft foods but don't worry - this is temporary.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR DENTURES?

Because dentures are completely removable, caring for them is very easy. It is recommended that you brush and soak them at least once a day to prevent stains and to maintain your overall positive oral health. A note, however - don't use toothpaste to brush them. Instead, purchase specifically designed cleaning tablets designed for people who wear dentures.

HOW QUICKLY WILL I ADJUST TO DENTURES?

The answer to this question is a difficult one, as it is obviously going to depend on the patient. Some people get used to their new dentures right away, while others will need a bit more practice. In the vast majority of all situations, most patients report that they are fully adjusted to their new dentures in a few weeks or less.

WILL DENTURES AFFECT MY APPEARANCE?

Because of the precise measurements that will be taken at the beginning of the process (and because of how specifically dentures are fitted), they really shouldn't change your appearance in any way - with one exception. As you'll now have a mouth filled with beautiful new "teeth", you'll probably be smiling a lot more than you have been in the past

HOW DO DENTURES IMPACT MY SPEECH?

In the first few weeks after you get your dentures, you may notice a slight change to the way you talk. This is normal, because you're still getting used to the appliance itself. Once you've had the time to properly adjust and practice, any difficulty you have with pronouncing certain words will likely go away.
