Here are the most common questions we’re asked about periodontal treatment.

What Are the Stages of Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is divided into four stages, each successively worse than the one before it. The first stage, gingivitis, can be reversed, but the rest can only be treated. Severe periodontal disease often involves the loss of teeth and even soft tissue or other bones. It can also contribute to other health problems, including heart attacks and strokes.

The staff at our Cerritos dentist office are experienced in treating all stages of periodontal disease.

Are There Non-Surgical Options for Periodontal Treatment?

Gingivitis can usually be successfully treated with a deep cleaning. This is a two-step procedure. The first step, scaling, involves removing the plaque and tartar from beneath your gums. The second step, root planing, involves smoothing the surfaces of your roots to discourage bacteria from growing there again.

Your mouth is normally numbed with a local anesthetic during a deep cleaning. Sometimes oral or topical antibiotics are given to help control the infection in the mouth after a deep cleaning.

More advanced periodontal disease may involve a deep cleaning as a part of treatment, but it isn’t enough to successfully treat more advanced stages of the disease.

Why Do I Need Periodontal Treatment in Cerritos?

Surgical treatments are often required for periodontal treatment of mild to severe periodontal disease. The most common surgical treatments are soft tissue grafting, pocket reduction surgery, and bone grafting.

Soft Tissue Grafting

During the soft tissue grafting procedure, your doctor will remove a piece of tissue from the top of your mouth or another site and attach it to the area around an affected tooth to replace some of the gum tissue destroyed by bacteria.

Pocket Reduction Surgery

This is another procedure to help replace destroyed gum tissue. Your doctor will make an incision around the affected tooth and lift the gum tissue to expose the roots, which will then be deep cleaned.

The gum tissue will then be sutured back into place in such a way as to help reduce the pocket around the tooth. Sometimes the underlying bone will be recontoured during this process to make up for any bone loss and make it easier to clean the tooth.

Bone Grafting

Advanced periodontal disease can destroy the bone around your tooth, leading to tooth loss. This procedure helps prevent that outcome by grafting healthy bone (yours, donated, or synthetic) around the tooth to hold it in place.

The bone graft also allows new bone growth to form around it.

Is There Anything I Can Do at Home to Treat My Periodontal Disease?

Good oral hygiene is the foundation of oral health and will prevent your periodontal disease from worsening. If you’ve been treated for gingivitis, good oral hygiene will keep it from returning and prevent the need for more periodontal treatment down the line.

Our team can help you get an idea of how much you’ll need to pay out of pocket for your treatment when you visit. We offer payment plans and outside financing, too.

How Much Does Periodontal Treatment Cost?

The cost of periodontal treatment varies widely based on the stage of the disease, how many teeth are involved, and the treatment or treatments necessary. It also depends on your insurance coverage. When you come into our Cerritos office for a consultation, the doctor will come up with a treatment plan and the staff will go over finances with you.
