WHAT IS A DEEP DENTAL CLEANING?

Deep teeth cleaning, also called scaling and root planing (SRP), is one of the best ways to treat advanced gingivitis and periodontal disease. The main cause of gum disease is tartar and plaque buildup that leads to a bacterial infection in the gums. Deep dental cleaning is designed to remove that hard-to-reach plaque and tartar (aka calculus), especially when it is found at or below the gumline.

WHY WOULD I NEED DEEP TEETH CLEANING

If you have a gum infection and periodontal disease, you are at risk of losing your teeth. Gum disease can also cause other problems, and the bacteria infecting the gums can travel to the rest of the body and even the heart. This can be dangerous. Fortunately, periodontal disease is treatable, and one of the main treatments is deep dental cleaning.

A deep dental cleaning focuses on the tooth below the gum line and the root of the tooth. Deep cleaning eliminates bacteria, under gum line plaque build-up, and works to treat gingivitis or periodontitis, commonly known as gum disease.

HOW IS PERIODONTAL DISEASE DIAGNOSED?

During your dental examination, we will check your teeth and gums for signs of plaque, tartar, and inflammation. We will also use a probe to determine if you have any pockets in your gums at the base of the teeth. Pockets of 3 or greater indicate periodontal disease.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE?

Gum disease first starts out as gingivitis, inflammation of the gums, and then progresses to the more serious periodontal disease (aka periodontitis) in which the gums are now infected with bacteria. The bacteria causes problems by eating away at the tooth root and destroying the gums. Signs and symptoms include:

  • Red, inflamed gums
  • Pockets appearing at the base of the teeth
  • Teeth “growing” longer as the gums recede
  • Bleeding while brushing and flossing
  • Bad breath that does not go away

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR MY DEEP DENTAL CLEANING?

Unless you have concerns about being conscious during the procedure, your dentist will be using a local anesthetic to numb the area being cleaned, as the dental hygienist will be probing under the gums to remove hidden plaque and tartar. Please let us know at Dentist of Cerritos if you are taking any blood thinners (such as Warfarin) or if you have any heart conditions. We may recommend antibiotics to take before and after the procedure.

HOW DO DEEP DENTAL CLEANINGS WORK?

A deep dental cleaning is in some ways not that different from a regular cleaning except it lasts a bit longer and goes deeper into the cleaning. You will also have your gums numbed first before the cleaning begins. Because deep dental cleaning is performed in quadrants of the mouth, we often do two quadrants per session depending on the patient’s needs.

IS DEEP TEETH CLEANING PAINFUL?

Because a local anesthetic is used to numb the gums, you probably won’t feel much at all during the deep dental cleaning procedure. Afterward, however, you may have some tenderness or soreness in the gums as you recover. This should go away in a day or two, though some people are more sensitive to hot and cold for a few weeks after the cleaning.

WHAT IS THE COST OF A DEEP DENTAL CLEANING?

Because they require more skill and time, deep dental cleanings cost more than routine teeth cleanings. They are also typically charged per quadrant, which can run from $150 to $250 per quadrant. Your dental insurance may help with some of these costs, and you can choose to get one quadrant done at a time to spread out the expense.
