What is Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Periodontal Disease Cerritos, CA

Periodontal disease is a common oral health issue for many adults in America. In fact, almost half of all adults over 30 have some stage of the disease, and the proportion only increases with age. Periodontal disease is caused by an infection in the gums around your teeth.

The bacteria that live in your mouth and feed off the food you eat form a thin bacterial film over your teeth called plaque. This plaque eventually hardens into tartar, which can’t be removed by brushing. The buildup of plaque and tartar and can lead to an infection, which is periodontal disease (also called gum disease).

Periodontal disease is progressive and gets worse over time if left untreated. It eventually causes soft tissue and bone loss, painful abscesses, and can spread beyond your mouth to infect other systems and cause serious health problems such as diabetes.

What Are the Stages of Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease has four stages, ranked in severity from gingivitis to advanced periodontitis. Each stage is worse than the one before.

Gingivitis

This is the first stage of the disease. It’s marked by inflammation of the gums. They may become red and feel irritated. They can also bleed, particularly after brushing and flossing. This is the only stage that is completely reversible.

Mild Periodontitis

In this stage, the inflamed gum tissue begins to pull away from the teeth. This causes the formation of pockets around the teeth. Bacteria, plaque, and even food collect in the pockets, worsening the infection. Some of the bones in your mouth may become damaged.

Moderate Periodontitis

The gums continue receding and bone loss and soft tissue damage occur. You may begin to experience pain at this stage. Your teeth may also begin to loosen.

Severe Periodontitis

This is the most advanced stage of the disease, in which you will probably lose teeth and can experience other health problems. You may also experience deep and painful abscesses if your periodontal disease progresses this far.

What Are the Symptoms of Periodontal Disease?

Red, swollen, and irritated gums are the first symptoms of periodontal disease. Your gums may bleed at times. As the disease progresses, you might notice constant bad breath or a bad taste, gum recession, and painful teeth or gums. Chewing may become painful.

Are There Any Risk Factors for Periodontal Disease?

Some people are at more risk of developing it than others. Heredity plays a role, as does smoking. Crooked teeth and stress make periodontal disease more likely. Diabetes, hormonal changes, and underlying immune disorders can also predispose you to developing periodontal disease.

The primary risk factor for the development of periodontal disease, however, is poor oral hygiene. This makes you more likely to develop it regardless of any other health conditions or predispositions you might have.

How Do I Prevent Periodontal Disease?

The best way to prevent periodontal disease is to practice good oral hygiene by consistently brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, and using mouthwash. You should also be sure to visit our Cerritos office twice a year for your regular cleanings. This will prevent bacteria from building up and turning into gingivitis.
